The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced the recall on November 22, 2024.

The products bear the establishment number “EST. 2574B” inside the USDA mark of inspection. They include fresh beef with a “use by” date of November 14, 2024, and frozen products labeled with a production date of October 22, 2024. These items were distributed to restaurant locations nationwide.

FSIS discovered the contamination after the Minnesota Department of Agriculture reported illnesses linked to the ground beef. On November 20, a sample tested positive for E. coli O157. To date, 15 illnesses have been reported, with onset dates ranging from November 2 to November 10, 2024.

E. coli O157:H7 can cause serious illness, including dehydration, bloody diarrhea, and abdominal cramps, occurring 2–8 days after exposure. Severe cases may lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a potentially fatal kidney condition. Symptoms of HUS include easy bruising, pallor, and reduced urine output. Individuals experiencing these symptoms should seek immediate medical care.

Restaurants are urged to check refrigerators and freezers and avoid serving the recalled products. The items should be discarded or returned to the place of purchase. Consumers are advised to cook ground beef to an internal temperature of 160°F to kill harmful bacteria. Use a food thermometer to ensure safety.
