DeSoto Parish, La. (1/27/2026) – A winter storm claimed another life in northwest Louisiana, according to the DeSoto Parish Sheriff’s Office. Officials confirmed the death of an elderly man and his two pets early Monday.
Deputies found the man deceased inside his home around 4:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 27. Authorities also located a generator operating inside the garage.
Investigators determined the generator was not properly ventilated. Consequently, officials attributed the death to unsafe generator use during the storm.
This incident marked the third winter storm-related death in northwest Louisiana. Previously, two storm-related deaths occurred in Caddo Parish.
In the first Caddo Parish case, authorities found a person dead in the 1500 block of Texas Street. The Shreveport Fire Department made the discovery while responding to a call.
In the second case, responders found another person dead near the YMCA on Milam Street in downtown Shreveport. Authorities continue reviewing the circumstances.
Following the DeSoto Parish incident, the Sheriff’s Office issued urgent safety guidance. Officials stressed that generators must never operate indoors or in enclosed spaces.
Additionally, warming stations are available at every fire district across DeSoto Parish. These locations serve residents without heat or electricity.
Furthermore, officials announced a public shelter opening by noon at the Stonewall Community Center. The facility sits at 5208 Highway 3276 near Salem Baptist Church.
