Hessmer, LA (October 21, 2025) – The Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal (SFM) is investigating two separate residential fires over the weekend that left four people dead, including a child, in Hessmer and Houma.
The first fire occurred Saturday morning around 7:17 a.m. in the 100 block of Lymon Lane in Hessmer. According to officials, the Hessmer Volunteer Fire Department discovered three victims — a 58-year-old man, a 47-year-old woman, and a 10-year-old boy — inside the home. All three were pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators say there were no working smoke alarms found in the residence.
The second fatal fire took place late Sunday night in the 1100 block of Grinage Street in Houma. One victim, a 70-year-old man, died, and his brother was hospitalized with serious burn injuries after being rescued from the home. He was transported to University Medical Center in New Orleans for treatment. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the home had working smoke alarms.
Both the Hessmer Volunteer Fire Department and the Houma Fire Department requested assistance from the State Fire Marshal’s Office to determine the cause and origin of the fires.
“These tragedies are heartbreaking and often preventable,” said DPS Principal Assistant Chief Bryan J. Adams. “We urge every Louisiana resident to ensure their homes are protected with working smoke alarms.”
The State Fire Marshal’s Office continues to remind residents about its Operation Save-A-Life program, which provides free smoke alarms and professional installation to Louisiana households in need.
