Warming Centers Open as Winter Storm Moves In

Natchitoches: MLK Recreation Center Opens
In Natchitoches, the city partnered with the Natchitoches Homeless Coalition to open a warming center. The MLK Recreation Center, located at 660 MLK Drive, will operate as long as power remains available.
The center opens Saturday at 12:00 p.m. and remains open through Tuesday at 8:00 a.m. Officials are requesting volunteers and donations to support operations. Needed items include blankets, bottled water, non-perishable food, and cold-weather supplies.
Volunteer and participant sign-ups will begin tomorrow at the MLK Recreation Center.
Alexandria: Community Warming Shelter Opening Friday
In Alexandria, organizers announced plans to open a warming shelter on Friday, January 23, at 3:30 p.m. The shelter will provide refuge from dangerously cold temperatures expected to begin that evening.
Community leaders ask residents to keep those without heat in their thoughts and prayers. Organizers stress the importance of maintaining power and heat during the storm.
Avoyelles Parish: Daytime Warming Center in Bunkie
Avoyelles Parish opened a warming center at 109 West Oak Street in Bunkie. The center operates from daylight to dark from Saturday, January 24, through Monday, January 26.
Visitors must bring their own blankets, bedding, or other warming items. The center does not provide blankets or supplies. Entry is free and available to anyone in need of warmth.
St. Landry Parish: Shelter at Former Indian Hills Country Club
St. Landry Parish opened a warming center at the former Indian Hills Country Club. The location serves individuals who are homeless or lack adequate heat.
The center opens Sunday, January 24, at 4:00 p.m. and remains open through Tuesday, January 27. Guests must bring a photo ID. Officials encourage guests to bring medicine, pillows, blankets, and personal items.
The facility is located at 1141 East Prudhomme Lane in Opelousas.
Region 8: North Louisiana Warming Shelters
Across Region 8, officials activated multiple warming shelters to support residents during freezing conditions. These locations serve adults, families, and individuals seeking short-term warmth.
In Monroe, The Salvation Army at 105 Hart Street is accepting residents on a first-come basis. The shelter accommodates approximately 52 people and opens whenever temperatures fall below 40 degrees. Liller Marbles Community Center at 2950 Renwick Street remains open while freezing conditions persist.
In West Monroe, the Rec at 7th Square at 1802 North 7th Street opens daily at 5:00 p.m. A secondary site at 400 South 5th Street will open if capacity is exceeded. Hope House at 407 Good Hope Road and Hellfighters West Monroe at 601 Smith Street in Bawcomville are also open.
Morehouse Parish opened the Dotson Park Recreation Center at 201 Dotson Street in Bastrop. The center remains open until temperatures rise above freezing.
In Madison Parish, the Tallulah Community Center at 800 North Beech Street will open if temperatures drop below 30 degrees. Residents can confirm availability by calling 318-574-5147.
Franklin Parish opened the Jack Hammon Community Center at 810 Adams Street in Winnsboro. The center opens daily at 5:00 p.m. during freezing weather.
In Jackson Parish, shelters include the Charles Garrett Community Center and the Jackson Parish Community Center at 160 Industrial Drive in Jonesboro. The Jackson Parish facility opens at 6:00 p.m. during cold weather events.
Officials report no warming centers are currently available in Farmerville, Rayville, Columbia, Lake Providence, Oak Grove, or Newellton. Authorities continue monitoring conditions and will issue updates as needed.
