Vernon Parish, La. (12/5/2025) — Vernon Parish homicide arrest details emerged early Friday after deputies responded to a 911 call about a shooting.
The call came in at 12:25 a.m. on December 5, 2025.
Deputies and emergency crews arrived at a Hughes Road residence near West Hawthorne Road in Leesville. They found 21-year-old Kavin Simmons Jr. with a single gunshot wound to the chest. First responders attempted lifesaving measures. However, Simmons died at the scene.
Detectives and the Vernon Parish Coroner’s Office began processing the scene. They also interviewed witnesses to understand the events leading to the shooting.
Investigators learned that Simmons argued with a 13-year-old male family member moments before the shooting. The juvenile retrieved a pistol and fired one round, striking Simmons in the chest. The gunshot caused Simmons’ death.
Deputies took the juvenile into custody at the scene without incident. Authorities later arrested him on one count of second-degree murder. He now awaits court proceedings in a secure juvenile facility.
Furthermore, investigators continue gathering evidence. The Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office reports the case remains active.
