Unlocking Opportunities: Second Chance Job Fair with Louisiana Central and United Way

Alexandria, La (10/20/2023) – Louisiana Central and the United Way of Central Louisiana have joined forces to present the Manufacturing Month Second Chance Job Fair, an event designed to connect individuals who’ve faced challenges, including those previously incarcerated, with opportunities in the region’s thriving manufacturing sector.

Scheduled for October 20 at the Alexandria Mall, this event is set to be a game-changer, offering a fresh start and new beginnings for individuals seeking employment, particularly in manufacturing, an industry pivotal to our region’s growth.

Central Louisiana boasts a robust manufacturing sector, offering countless opportunities for employment and career advancement. It’s a sector with diverse jobs, from advanced manufacturing technicians and machine operators to quality control inspectors and industrial engineers. These roles, filled by skilled and dedicated individuals, are essential to driving our region’s economy forward.

However, it is recognized that not everyone’s journey is straightforward, and sometimes, life’s circumstances lead to detours. That’s why the Second Chance Job Fair is such an important event. It provides a welcoming platform for individuals who’ve faced past challenges to explore meaningful career opportunities in manufacturing and regain their footing on a path to a hopeful and successful future.

“A career in manufacturing can be a ‘door-opener’ for someone searching for a second chance. Whether that second chance is because of former legal issues or transitioning into a new career path, the Central Louisiana manufacturing sector provides many opportunities and benefits for individuals and their families," Program Coordinator Javonti Thomas said. "Presenting and creating opportunities and programs that encourage people from underrepresented backgrounds to meet and network with employers is a key strategy to strengthen our workforce. Many industries, not just manufacturing, are searching to fill positions; while, barriers leave some out of the workforce. Jobs fairs that place emphasis on welcoming everyone to meet and discuss getting a job, having a conversation, is a good first step in eliminating some of those barriers."

Through the event, attendees can:

  • Connect with Local Employers: Top manufacturers from the Central Louisiana area will be on-site, actively seeking dedicated individuals who are ready to contribute their skills and work ethic to the industry.
  • Gain Insight: Workshops and informational sessions will be available to help individuals understand the manufacturing sector better and explore the career options within it.
  • Network: Connect with professionals and peers in the field, opening doors to mentorship and support in their journey towards a successful career.

The partnership between Louisiana Central and the United Way of Central Louisiana embodies a shared vision: to develop our region’s workforce and make a difference in our community by growing opportunities and empowering individuals. By hosting the Second Chance Job Fair, the aim is to break down barriers, build bridges, and provide pathways to success.

“Working together with the Alexandria Mall and Louisiana Central to provide an opportunity for people to gain better employment is a win for everyone.” said Michelle Purl, President and CEO at United Way of Central Louisiana. “All are encouraged to attend, especially those that are looking for a second chance in the workforce.”

The world of manufacturing in Central Louisiana is vast, and it welcomes everyone with determination and a willingness to contribute to its growth. Second chances allow for individual and community success and growth, and the organizations are excited to provide a platform where people can step forward and embrace the opportunities that lie ahead.

Whether you’re seeking employment, looking to build a promising career, or simply want to explore what the region’s manufacturing industry has to offer, visit the Second Chance Job Fair on October 20 at the Alexandria Mall as we open the doors to a brighter, more inclusive future. Together with the United Way of Central Louisiana, our community is committed to unlocking opportunities and transforming lives in our vibrant community.
