UEMBA Opens Warming Station to Address Alexandria’s Cold Weather Shelter Needs

ALEXANDRIA, La. (1/12/2025) – UEMBA opens warming station at its Bank Drive facility to provide warm beds for Alexandria’s homeless during freezing weather. The initiative began Saturday, January 11, 2025, following a coordinated effort led UEMBA’s leadership and other local ministers.

The United Educational Missionary Baptist Association (UEMBA) partnered with the Central Louisiana Homeless Coalition, Manna House, the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office, Alexandria Fire Department, and others to ensure the warming station could serve those in need. Rev. Kirts explained that the decision was driven by a pressing need, further highlighted by the tragic death of Carl Blackburn, a 65-year-old homeless man, on January 8 during freezing temperatures.

The warming station will remain open through Tuesday and could extend operations depending on future weather needs. The UEMBA facility, previously used for Thanksgiving and Christmas events, has now transitioned to meet emergency needs for shelter and warmth.

Community members have voiced concerns over the lack of year-round shelter solutions in Alexandria. One resident criticized local shelter availability, stating, “There are enough vacant buildings and resources to provide consistent shelter for displaced people.” Others highlighted the need for broader collaboration beyond traditional organizations like the Salvation Army, which has faced criticism for capacity and accessibility issues.

City officials previously operated a warming station at the Bolton Avenue Community Center but ceased operations on January 11 due to improved weather conditions. While over 30 individuals were served there, the need for additional shelter options remains apparent.

Rev. Kirts emphasized the importance of community collaboration in addressing this crisis. “We saw a need for warm beds and took immediate action after receiving clearance from the Alexandria Fire Department,” he said.

The effort underscores the critical role of nontraditional partnerships in meeting community needs during emergencies. Alexandria’s leaders and organizations are urged to prioritize long-term solutions for displaced individuals as winter continues.
