Two Shootings on Lacassine Drive in Two Weeks Highlight Lack of Transparency in Public Safety

ALEXANDRIA, La. (12/6/2024) – Two shootings on Lacassine Drive in less than two weeks have raised serious concerns about transparency in Alexandria’s public safety.

On November 25 and December 5, 2024, the Alexandria Police Department (APD) responded to separate incidents on the same street. However, the press releases failed to provide essential information, leaving the community with more questions than answers.

The releases omitted critical details, including the current condition of the victims, whether the attacks were targeted or random, and any information about suspects. Additionally, the type of injuries sustained and weapons used were not disclosed, leaving residents without a clear picture of the risks they may face.

APD must receive clearance from the mayor’s office before sharing information with the public. This policy has delayed the release of updates and restricted transparency. Many residents have voiced their frustration, with one saying, “I just wish a city official would tell us if there is an ongoing threat or something about the motive.”

Others expressed concerns about the city’s broader safety issues. One resident noted, “Five cops a shift cannot keep the city safe. It’s only a matter of time before the city breaks.” Another resident shared, “I’m afraid to come out of the house,” highlighting the fear permeating the community.

Residents are also questioning why Alexandria no longer receives monthly police reports, which were available under previous administrations. These reports helped keep citizens informed about crime trends and offered some reassurance about law enforcement efforts.

The shootings on Lacassine Drive emphasize the urgent need for clear and timely communication from city officials. As crime continues to impact daily life in Alexandria, the lack of transparency risks eroding public trust further.

Citizens are encouraged to share any information about these shootings by contacting APD or anonymously through Crime Stoppers of CenLa. Tips can also be submitted using the Crime Stoppers P3 Tipster App at www.p3tips.com.
