Alexandria, LA (5/30/2025) – Gun violence continues to rattle Alexandria as police investigate two more overnight shootings, bringing the city’s two-week total to six reported incidents, with six people injured and one person dead. Despite the rising toll, city officials remain publicly silent.
The latest shootings occurred less than five hours apart. On Thursday, May 29, at approximately 8:00 PM, Alexandria Police were notified by a local hospital of a person suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. The shooting reportedly took place on 3rd Street.
Then, just after midnight on Friday, May 30, officers responded to another shooting. This one occurred in the 1500 block of Levin Street, where a second victim also sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
According to Police Chief Chad Gremillion, both cases are under investigation and “do not appear to be connected in any way to the incidents that have occurred in our city during the last few weeks.”
That now totals six separate incidents involving firearms in under 14 days. The victims include both adults and, in some cases, teens. The community is on edge, with residents reporting fear in carrying out everyday activities: elderly sitting on their porch, walking to their car, or letting children play outside.
We reached out to council members representing the affected areas: Malcolm Larvadain (District 1), Gary Johnson (District 2), Council President Cynthia Perry (District 3) as well as at-large members Jim Villard and Jules Green. While most did not respond, Councilman Jules Green shared that he is currently attending to matters following the recent passing of his wife and plans to review the issues this weekend before offering a full response. The silence is deafening.
Where do we go from here?
A Plea to City Officials
It is time for more than police tape and press releases. Residents need action, not absence. The people of Alexandria deserve to feel safe in their neighborhoods, to see a plan, and to hear their leaders acknowledge the crisis.
We are urging city officials to step forward, speak up, and lead.
Resources for Families and Youth
For parents or guardians concerned about a young person’s future, the Louisiana National Guard Youth Challenge Program (YCP) may offer a path forward. The next class begins in July, and interviews are being held Saturday, May 31 at 10:00 AM at the Alexandria Convention Center, 2225 North MacArthur Drive.
