Delta State University case (Cleveland)
Campus and state officials said Reed was found hanging from a tree near the university’s pickleball courts on Monday morning. Authorities reported no initial signs of foul play; a preliminary coroner’s exam later stated Reed had no broken bones or injuries consistent with an assault. DSU canceled classes and centennial events and made counseling available while the investigation continues with assistance from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.
Reed’s family has retained civil rights attorney Ben Crump and is calling for an independent autopsy and full transparency. U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson has asked for federal involvement to ensure a thorough review. Officials say conclusions will depend on final autopsy results.
Vicksburg case
Hours after the DSU discovery, Vicksburg police responded to a wooded area near the Ameristar Casino, where Zukatis was found hanging. Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey identified Zukatis and said the death is being handled as a death investigation pending autopsy; police have not publicly indicated whether foul play is suspected.
