Two Correctional Officers Fired and Criminally Charged

St. Landry, LA (11/10/2025) – Two correctional officers have been fired and criminally charged following an investigation into injuries suffered by a 73-year-old inmate at the St. Landry Parish Jail. Sheriff Bobby J. Guidroz confirmed the arrests and dismissals in a statement released November 5, 2025.

According to Sheriff Guidroz, a social worker at Opelousas General Hospital notified authorities about the possible abuse. Investigators quickly launched an internal and criminal probe. As a result, officers John Smith and Hayden Aymond were arrested and terminated from employment.

John Smith, 30, of Port Barre, faces charges of cruelty to persons with infirmities, failure to seek assistance, and malfeasance in office. Hayden Aymond, 19, of Opelousas, faces charges of failure to seek assistance and malfeasance in office.

Sheriff Guidroz emphasized that the department remains committed to integrity. He stated, “When employees fail, we seek the truth, find out what happened, and take corrective measures.” He added that “Committed to a Higher Standard” is more than a slogan—it is his pledge to the citizens of St. Landry Parish.

Authorities continue to investigate whether additional individuals were involved. Tipsters can also use the P3 mobile app or dial **TIPS from a cellphone. All tips remain anonymous, and cash rewards are available for information leading to an arrest.

All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
