Tropical Waves in the Caribbean and Atlantic: Current Developments and Forecast

This Thursday, a tropical wave over the western Caribbean Sea is producing widespread but disorganized shower and thunderstorm activity. Moving westward at around 20 mph, there is potential for some development of this system over the northwestern Caribbean Sea or the southwestern Gulf of Mexico during the next several days.

The system has a low (10 percent) chance of formation in the next 48 hours and a low (30 percent) chance in the next 7 days.

Meanwhile, another tropical wave located several hundred miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands continues to produce disorganized shower and thunderstorm activity. Environmental conditions are forecasted to be conducive for development, and a tropical depression or tropical storm is likely to form this weekend several hundred miles east of the Windward Islands.

The system has a medium (40 percent) chance of formation in the next 48 hours and a high (70 percent) chance in the next 7 days.
