AUSTIN, Texas (8/11/2025) — Three people are dead following a shooting in the parking lot of a Target store in North Austin on Monday afternoon, according to the Austin Police Department (APD).
Authorities say the call came in around 2:15 p.m. reporting gunfire at the store. Officers arrived minutes later and learned the suspect, a 32-year-old man, had fled the scene in a stolen car. Police say he later crashed that vehicle, stole another, and was eventually apprehended in southeast Austin after being tased by officers.
Austin-Travis County EMS confirmed that two victims died at the scene and a third died later at a hospital. A fourth person was treated on-site for injuries unrelated to the shooting.
Due to the ongoing investigation, APD said vehicles in the Target parking lot will not be released until the crime scene is processed. As of 4 p.m., shoppers were advised to arrange alternate transportation home and await updates from police before returning for their vehicles.
In a statement posted to social media, Austin Mayor Kirk Watson called the shooting a “sickening, cowardly act of gun violence,” offering condolences to the victims’ families. “I am grateful for the quick response of our APD officers and other first responders and want to thank them for their actions to apprehend the suspect,” Watson said.
The investigation remains active, and police have not yet released the names of the victims or suspect.
