GRANT PARISH, La. – Authorities say three individuals attempted to smuggle over $3.5M in synthetic marijuana into a federal prison using drones.

The Grant Parish Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation that led to the search of a short-term rental home.

Inside, deputies discovered synthetic marijuana soaked into paper sheets, valued at $3,583,387, along with $33,600 in THC wax and 11 phones.

The group allegedly planned to use two drones to deliver the contraband into a nearby federal facility.

Daireeon Russell, 32, of San Diego, California, was arrested on several felony charges.

Those include two counts of possession with intent to distribute marijuana, illegal use of drugs in the presence of children, possession of drug paraphernalia, and attempting to take contraband into a penal institution.

Kevin Freeman, 19, and Rani Caye Deisher, 37, both from Pineland, Texas, were arrested on the same charges.

Deputies say children were present during the illegal activity.

The operation to smuggle over $3.5M in synthetic marijuana is now under continued investigation.

Officials have not released the targeted federal facility’s name.

All three suspects remain in custody pending court appearances.
