Bernice, LA – (10/19/2025) – A 17-year-old hunter from Monroe has died after what investigators believe was a lightning strike during severe weather near the Weldon community in Union Parish.
According to the Union Parish Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 8:30 PM on Saturday, October 18, 2025, to Robert Welch Road near Bernice after receiving reports of an injured person. Units from the Bernice Fire Department and local emergency medical services also responded.
Upon arrival, first responders were directed into a remote wooded area, where they discovered 17-year-old Colton Gauge Honeycutt inside an elevated deer stand.
Family members had grown concerned when Honeycutt did not return from his hunt earlier that evening. When storms moved through the area near sunset, relatives became alarmed and began searching for him.
Investigators believe Honeycutt was struck by lightning while in his stand as the line of thunderstorms passed. The Union Parish Coroner’s Office pronounced him deceased at the scene.
Authorities say the tragic incident remains under investigation.
