Suspicious Package Found at Courthouse Raises Concerns

Alexandria, LA (5/14/2024) – At approximately 8:40 AM this morning, during a routine security sweep of the courthouse, deputies assigned to Courthouse Security discovered an item on a bench outside one of the courtrooms, sparking immediate concern.

Upon finding the item, Courthouse Security deputies promptly reported it, leading to notifications being sent to the judges, courts, and Police Jury.

In response, deputies from the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office (RPSO) Bomb Squad were dispatched to examine the item. Following a thorough investigation, they determined it to be a bible housed in a wooden case.

The item was removed and secured by Courthouse Security, while efforts to locate the owner of the bible are currently underway.

Captain Greg Timberlake of the RPSO Special Operations Group emphasized the importance of adhering to protocols in such situations, stating, “Anytime we have something out of the ordinary like this left unattended, procedures are followed to determine what it is and to ensure the safety of the public as well as the employees of the courthouse.”

RPSO takes this opportunity to remind the public to remain vigilant and responsible when attending any public venue, urging individuals to keep their belongings in their possession at all times and refrain from leaving items unattended.

The courthouse security measures remain steadfast in prioritizing the safety and well-being of all individuals within the courthouse premises.
