State: Inmate Escapes from Medical Transport in Jefferson Parish

Jefferson Parish, LA (2/26/2024) – The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office (JPSO) is actively seeking escaped inmate Leon Ruffin following an incident during a medical transport.

At approximately 6:40 pm, Ruffin was being transferred from Ochsner Medical Center, located at 2500 Belle Chasse Highway, to the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center. However, before leaving the parking lot, Ruffin interrupted the transport, using pepper spray against the escorting deputy. In response, the deputy discharged her service weapon at Ruffin, although it is unclear if any shots hit Ruffin.

Subsequently, Ruffin fled the scene using a marked JPSO vehicle identified by ID number GO68 with license plate 239626. The abandoned vehicle was later discovered around 9:20 pm in Algiers, but Ruffin’s location remain unknown.

Described as a black male, approximately 5′9″ tall, weighing around 270 lbs, and bald, Ruffin is considered armed and dangerous. The public is urged to report any information regarding his whereabouts to the authorities immediately.

The sheriff’s office has classified the investigation as active and ongoing, with no further information available for release at this time.
