BATON ROUGE, La. (2/27/2025) – A Southern University student dies in a hazing ritual while participating in an off-campus fraternity event, according to sources familiar with the case.
Caleb Wilson, 20, of Kenner, Louisiana, collapsed during a reported Omega Psi Phi ritual and later died.
Wilson, a member of Southern University’s renowned Human Jukebox marching band, was taken to Baton Rouge General Hospital early Thursday morning. Friends transported him there after being at North Sherwood Forest Community Park. Medical staff pronounced him dead at 3:15 a.m. and notified Baton Rouge Police, initiating a death investigation.
Authorities are awaiting autopsy results to determine the cause of death. Meanwhile, Southern University officials have expressed condolences to Wilson’s family and assured students that counseling services are available.
His church, Pilgrim Baptist Church in Kenner, released a heartfelt statement mourning his loss. “This is an unspeakable tragedy, and our hearts are heavy as we grieve this immense loss,” the message read. The church encouraged prayers for Wilson’s family and the youth ministry.
Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO), where Wilson’s mother is a student, also extended condolences, emphasizing community support during this difficult time.
