Southern Fires Back Before the Bayou Classic: Marshall Faulk Named Head Coach in Stunning Move

Southern University has made a monumental move, naming New Orleans native and NFL legend Marshall Faulk as the next leader of its football program.

(This announcement arrives during a major rivalry weekend as Southern prepares to face Grambling in the Bayou Classic, adding even more intensity to an already high-stakes matchup.)

Faulk, a former standout running back at Carver High School in New Orleans, went on to craft one of the greatest collegiate careers ever at San Diego State. He finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting as a sophomore and fourth as a junior, cementing himself as one of the most dominant offensive players in college football history.

NFL Career

His NFL career elevated his status even further. Widely regarded as one of the greatest dual-threat running backs of all time, Faulk remains one of only three players in league history to record 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in the same season. He is also the only player ever to surpass both 12,000 rushing yards and 6,000 receiving yards in a career—an unmatched testament to his versatility and playmaking ability.

As a central piece of the famed “Greatest Show on Turf” with the St. Louis Rams, Faulk amassed more than 2,400 yards from scrimmage and scored 12 touchdowns during the team’s run to a victory in Super Bowl XXXIV. His brilliance was recognized with induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 2017.

Faulk arrives in Baton Rouge with limited coaching experience, having most recently served as the running backs coach under Deion Sanders at Colorado. This will be his first opportunity to lead an entire program.

He takes over a struggling Southern squad sitting at 1–10 heading into the Bayou Classic against in-state rival Grambling State. But if Faulk can ignite Southern the way Sanders revitalized Jackson State, Jaguars fans may have plenty to cheer about in the coming years.

With Marshall Faulk at the helm, Southern University hopes to rise once again to powerhouse status.
