RAPIDES PARISH, La. (12/5/2024) – Sheriff Mark Wood recently took to social media to dispel misinformation surrounding the Renaissance renewal tax, sparking significant community discussion. In his detailed post, he emphasized that the tax is a renewal, not an increase, and outlined its critical importance for Rapides Parish.
The sheriff clarified that failure to pass the renewal would lead to the closure of the Renaissance facility, a vital resource for juvenile detention in the parish. He noted that the state has committed additional funding for facility improvements, but only if the renewal passes. Without it, juveniles will have to be housed outside the parish or even the state, creating financial strain on general funds.
Many community members voiced their support for the renewal following Sheriff Wood’s post. One commenter stated, “I was voting YES before your post – but am now definitely encouraging others to do the same.” Another added, “I have personally seen how badly we need this facility and how bad it needs to be expanded. Anyone who is in or has been in law enforcement in our area should realize how important and needed this is.”
However, the renewal also faces opposition. Some critics claim that the tax benefits others more than the local community. One commenter stated, “I VOTE NO and stand firm. The number of Rapides Parish juvenile residents being housed in our local facility is slim to none.”
UrbanCast reached out to Renaissance Home officials, who confirmed that there are currently 11 juveniles housed in the detention center. Nine were arrested by the Alexandria Police Department, while the other two were apprehended by other agencies within Rapides Parish. These figures counter claims suggesting an influx of juveniles from other cities like New Orleans, Shreveport, or Baton Rouge.
Sheriff Wood reiterated the importance of the Renaissance renewal tax, emphasizing its impact on public safety and the financial stability of Rapides Parish. “Whether the renewal passes or not, I will still be everyone’s sheriff,” he stated. He encouraged informed and respectful discussions on the matter, urging voters to understand the facts before casting their votes.
