Robbery and High-Speed Chase Ends in Tragedy

Rapides Parish, LA (6/21/2024) – At approximately 4:37 PM today, deputies responded to a report of an armed robbery at a convenience store located at the intersection of LA Highway 121 and LA 465. While no injuries were reported, an undetermined amount of cash was taken.

Upon arrival, deputies and detectives quickly gathered solid information, positively identifying the suspect and the suspect vehicle. A “be on the lookout” alert was issued to all local law enforcement agencies. At approximately 7:48 PM, a Woodworth Police Officer spotted the suspect vehicle traveling north on US165 and attempted to initiate a traffic stop.

The suspect fled at a high rate of speed, turning onto Horseshoe Drive where RPSO Deputies and Alexandria Police joined the pursuit. Spike strips were deployed near the 6000 block of Twin Bridges Road in an attempt to stop the suspect vehicle. At that point, the suspect began firing at deputies, hitting their vehicle. Deputies returned fire, but the suspect managed to flee the location, continuing the pursuit along Twin Bridges Road, eventually stopping near Messina Road.

As the suspect brandished his weapon, deputies attempted to negotiate a peaceful surrender. Tragically, the suspect turned the gun on himself, firing one round and striking himself in the head.

Deputies immediately rendered medical assistance to the suspect until Acadian Ambulance arrived and transported him to a local hospital. The suspect’s condition is currently unknown, and his name has not been released.

Sheriff’s Detectives and the Crime Scene Unit have responded and are conducting their investigation. Authorities are asking the public to stay clear of the area from the 6000 block of Twin Bridges Road to Messina Road, as it remains an active crime scene.
