Rapides Coroner confirms suspected drowning in death of 11-year-old Za’niyah Boyd; no response from City of Alexandria officials

ALEXANDRIA, La. (4/5/2026) — The Rapides Parish Coroner’s Office has confirmed a suspected drowning in the death of 11-year-old Za’niyah Ja’Nell “Niyah” Boyd, while City of Alexandria officials have yet to respond to questions surrounding the case.

UrbanCast extends its deepest condolences to her family, friends, classmates, and all who knew and loved her during this difficult time.

In a response to UrbanCast, the coroner’s office stated that Za’niyah died on April 1, 2026, at Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital after a “suspected drowning event” three days earlier.

Officials also confirmed that an autopsy is being conducted. The cause and manner of death remain pending.

The coroner’s office also noted that the child’s legal guardian is aware of the circumstances known to date.

This marks the first official confirmation of details surrounding the incident, which had not previously been publicly released.

The family of the 11-year-old has continued to seek answers, saying they have received differing accounts of what happened before her hospitalization.

As previously reported by UrbanCast, Za’niyah was a 5th grade student at Rosenthal Montessori in Alexandria. She was recognized for her academic achievements and known for her personality and creativity.

Family members have said the incident involved a swimming pool. However, they continue to express concerns about what led up to the event and the timeline of response.

Sent Written Request

UrbanCast sent written requests to City Council President Cynthia Perry, other members of the Alexandria City Council, the Alexandria chief of police, the Alexandria fire chief, and the coroner’s office.

As of publication, no response has been received from City of Alexandria officials.

The lack of communication continues to raise concerns within the community, especially in a case involving the death of a child.

Public viewing and visitation for Za’niyah will be held Saturday, April 18, 2026, from 9 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Alexandria. Burial will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery.

This remains an active investigation, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
