Vatican City (December 31, 2022) – Pope Benedict XVI, born Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger, was born in Germany on April 16, 1927. Benedict was the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State from April 19, 2005, until his resignation on February 28, 2013.
He was elected as pope in the 2005 papal conclave that followed the death of Pope John Paul II. Pope Benedict became known as “pope emeritus” upon his resignation. He lived in Rome from 1981 until his death on December 31, 2022.
