Alexandria, LA (8/12/2024) – The Polk Street shooting in Alexandria has taken a tragic turn, resulting in an upgraded charge of 2nd degree murder. According to the Rapides Parish Coroner’s Office, Eric Vandersypen, a 35-year-old male, succumbed to his gunshot wound on August 12, 2024. He had been admitted to a local hospital after being shot on August 9, 2024.
The new or upgraded charge was added to the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office Inmate Inquiry System at 3:00 PM on August 12, 2024. The suspect, 37-year-old Zachary Bonier, was initially arrested for attempted second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon.
The case is still under active investigation by both the Alexandria Police Department (APD) and the Rapides Parish Coroner’s Office (RPCO). An email was sent to Michael Caffery, Deputy Chief Administrative Officer, Office of the Mayor, requesting an update on the case. However, UrbanCast/involvedinitall.com does not expect a reply or statement from Caffery. The email was also sent to the Alexandria City Council.
All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty. The investigation into the Polk Street shooting continues, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
