Rapides Parish, LA (6/29/2024) – A tragic two-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 3170 claimed the life of a Pineville resident on Saturday, June 29, 2024.
Louisiana State Police Troop E reported that the incident occurred around 2:00 p.m.
The crash involved a 2015 Chevrolet pickup truck, driven by 68-year-old Donald R. Jones of Alexandria, and a 2023 Hyundai SUV driven by 69-year-old Oddis L. Dunbar Jr. of Pineville. According to the initial investigation, Jones was traveling westbound when his vehicle crossed the centerlines into the eastbound lane, resulting in a head-on collision with Dunbar’s SUV.
Dunbar, who was wearing a seatbelt, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Jones, who was also restrained, suffered minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Routine toxicology samples were collected from both drivers and submitted for analysis.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but authorities emphasize that distracted and inattentive driving remains a significant issue in the state. The Louisiana State Police urge all drivers to maintain vigilance while on the road, as a momentary lapse in attention can lead to devastating outcomes.
As of this year, Troop E Troopers have investigated 31 fatal crashes, resulting in 34 fatalities.
