Pedestrian Killed in Avoyelles Parish Hit and Run Crash

Marksville, LA (6/2/2024) – Early on Friday, May 31, 2024, Louisiana State Police Troop E responded to a fatal hit-and-run incident on Louisiana Highway 107 near Louisiana Highway 1191. The crash resulted in the death of 45-year-old Curtis Lavalais of Mansura.

The preliminary investigation indicates that Lavalais was walking in the southbound lane of Louisiana Highway 107, just north of Louisiana Highway 1191, when he was struck by an unknown vehicle. Lavalais sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The vehicle involved fled the scene immediately after the collision.

The crash remains under active investigation. Troopers are diligently working to gather information about the vehicle and driver involved in this tragic incident. Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the crash to contact Louisiana State Police Troop E at 318-487-5911.

State Police emphasize the importance of pedestrian safety, advising individuals to be vigilant when walking near roadways. Recommended safety measures include wearing reflective clothing, avoiding distractions, and walking a safe distance from travel lanes while facing oncoming traffic.

Additionally, Troopers remind drivers of the severe consequences associated with hit-and-run accidents. Committing a felony hit-and-run that results in death or serious bodily injury can lead to fines up to $5,000 and imprisonment for up to ten years.

So far in 2024, Troop E has investigated 25 fatal crashes, resulting in 27 deaths.
