Operation Safe Christmas launches to protect holiday shoppers across Rapides Parish

Alexandria, La. (12/16/2025) – Operation Safe Christmas holiday shopping safety efforts are increasing across Rapides Parish during the final weeks before Christmas. Sheriff Mark Wood announced the initiative during a morning press conference held in the parking lot of Alexandria Commons Shopping Center, home to retailers such as Best Buy and Old Navy.

Sheriff Wood said the timing reflects the surge in holiday shopping across Alexandria and Pineville. He noted that families from across the parish rely on these retail corridors, making visibility and coordination critical.

The Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the Alexandria Police Department, Pineville Police Department, Louisiana Probation and Parole, and Louisiana State Police. Together, agencies will conduct coordinated patrols throughout Alexandria, Pineville, and surrounding communities.

Sheriff Wood said law enforcement will flood shopping areas with marked units, unmarked units, and plainclothes officers. Patrols will focus on shopping centers, large retailers, parking lots, nearby streets, and surrounding neighborhoods through the Christmas holiday.

He emphasized that the operation centers on deterrence and public confidence. Increased visibility aims to prevent shoplifting, vehicle burglaries, and other property crimes common during the holiday season.

Sheriff Wood also encouraged shoppers to take simple safety precautions. He advised shopping with a friend, staying aware of surroundings, and avoiding distractions while walking to vehicles.

He warned against leaving purchases visible inside vehicles. Shoppers were encouraged to place items in trunks or cover them to reduce theft opportunities.

Law enforcement also urged residents to report suspicious activity. Sheriff Wood said community cooperation allows officers to respond quickly and effectively.

Pineville Police Department spokesman Chief Roy Fore said Pineville has used similar proactive strategies in past years. He said officers will maintain an active presence around businesses and parking areas throughout the season.

Louisiana State Police Troop E spokesman Captain Christopher Wright said state police are supporting local agencies. He thanked Sheriff Wood for including LSP in the coordinated operation.

Sheriff Wood addressed public perception during the briefing. He said Alexandria and Rapides Parish remain safe places to shop and spend time with family.

He added that law enforcement families shop in the same stores as the public. The press conference concluded with officials wishing residents a safe and Merry Christmas.
