OPELOUSAS: Parent Charged in Homicide of Two-Month-Old Infant Turns Himself In

Opelousas, La. (11/4/2025) – The Opelousas Police Department has confirmed that Taylor Broussard, wanted in the homicide of his two-month-old daughter, has turned himself in to authorities.

Broussard surrendered and was booked into the St. Landry Parish Jail. He faces charges of First Degree Murder, Cruelty to Juveniles, and Second Degree Battery. His arrest follows that of the child’s mother, Kaylee Fontenot, who was taken into custody last week shortly after warrants were issued.

How the Investigation Began

The case began on October 25, 2025, when officers responded to a medical emergency in the 200 block of North Liberty Street. When they arrived, they found an unresponsive two-month-old girl. Officers immediately performed life-saving measures until paramedics arrived.

The infant was transported to a nearby hospital but was later pronounced dead. Following an autopsy, the coroner’s office determined the death was a homicide caused by severe abuse and neglect.

Details from the Autopsy

The coroner’s report revealed evidence of extreme malnutrition and dehydration, along with broken rib bones, some showing signs of earlier healing. The most severe injury was a severed lower spine, which resulted in internal bleeding and ultimately caused the child’s death.

The Investigation and Arrests

Investigators with the Opelousas Police Department’s Special Operations Division conducted interviews and reviewed evidence that linked both parents to the infant’s condition. Detectives learned that Kaylee Fontenot and Taylor Broussard had exclusive custody of the child since birth.

Arrest warrants were obtained for both parents on the same charges:

  • First Degree Murder
  • Cruelty to Juveniles
  • Second Degree Battery

Fontenot was located and arrested first, while Broussard remained at large until this week, when he surrendered to law enforcement.

Statement from the Chief

Opelousas Police Chief Graig LeBlanc called the case “heartbreaking” and praised investigators for their diligence.

“Our hearts are with this infant who suffered unimaginable abuse,” LeBlanc said. “Our department remains committed to seeking justice. We ask the public for patience and support as this investigation continues.”

Ongoing Investigation

The Opelousas Police Department continues to actively investigate the case. Detectives are reviewing additional evidence and interviewing witnesses to ensure all responsible parties are held accountable.
