New Orleans: Man arrested for the Mardi Gras mass shooting; coroner named the 15-year-old victim

New Orleans, LA (2/22/2023) – The NOPD has arrested Mansour Mbodj (black male, DOB: 10-17-2001) in investigating a homicide that occurred on February 19, 2023, at the intersection of Saint Charles Avenue and Terpsichore Street that left one person dead and four others wounded.

NOPD officers and partnering law enforcement officers were nearby when they heard shots fired at around 9:30 p.m. Upon arrival at the location, officers discovered five victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Those victims included three males and two females. One of the female victims was identified as a 4-year-old child, while the deceased male was described as a teenager between the ages of 15 and 18.

Roderick Tobias, 15, was identified as the teen killed in the shooting by the coroner.

All of the victims were taken to the hospital by EMS, where the teenage male victim was later pronounced deceased. The other four victims were treated and subsequently released from medical care.

A quick response by NOPD and partner agencies, including the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office, Louisiana State Police, and the Louisiana Department of Corrections, led to the arrest near the scene of a suspected perpetrator – later identified as Mbodj. Two weapons were also confiscated during the investigation. Mbodj was arrested and booked at the time on a charge of illegally carrying a weapon.

As the investigation progressed, NOPD Homicide Unit detectives positively identified Mbodj as the perpetrator of the homicide. Today, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Mbodj on an additional count of second-degree murder. Mbodj was re-booked accordingly.

The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office will provided official identification of the deceased victim and determine the official cause of death upon completion of an autopsy.

Investigation into this incident remains active and ongoing. Anyone with additional information that can assist in this investigation is urged to contact NOPD Homicide Unit Det.
