Louisiana – Beginning August 1, 2024, third-party voter registration organizations must register before organizing voter registration drives. This new law mandates registration with the Secretary of State’s Office or the parish Registrar of Voters Office.
Interested individuals and entities must complete and submit a Voter Registration Drive Contact Form. Submission can be done in person or via email at [email protected].
Third-party voter registration drives involve soliciting, distributing, or collecting voter registration applications. Organizations conducting these activities must register unless only assisting immediate family members.
It’s important to receive crucial information and order voter registration applications before organizing a voter registration drive. The new law prohibits filling out or altering another individual’s voter registration application unless providing assistance.
Additionally, private and protected information on applications cannot be copied or reproduced. All completed applications must be submitted to the parish Registrar of Voters Office within 30 days or by the close of registration for the next election, whichever is sooner.
Violations of these rules can result in fines up to $2,000, imprisonment up to two years, or both for the first offense. For more details, review La. R.S. 18:1461.2 and R.S. 18:1461.7 regarding prohibited activities.
To ensure compliance and success, review the Voter Registration Drive Packet for best practices when organizing voter registration drives.
