RAPIDES: Low Turnout Marks Early Voting Period for Rapides Parish Tax Renewals

Early voting for the Municipal General Election in Rapides Parish commenced yesterday, April 13, but turnout has been notably low, according to representatives from the Rapides Parish Register of Voters Office. As citizens prepare to cast their ballots on April 27, the urgency to engage in public discussions and exercise the right to vote has been emphasized.

The election includes crucial decisions regarding tax renewals and levies that will directly impact the community’s infrastructure, education system, and public services. Here’s a recap of the key propositions on the ballot:

Road District No. 1A Proposition (Millage Renewal)

Voters will decide whether Road District No. 1A should continue to levy a special ad valorem tax of 25.03 mills for ten years, beginning in 2025. The funds, estimated at $544,600 annually, are earmarked for the construction, maintenance, and repair of public roads, highways, and bridges within the district.

School District Tax Renewals

Two school districts, Big Island School District Number 50 and Pineville School District No. 52, are seeking tax renewals to support education initiatives. The proposed taxes of 6.36 mills and 7.41 mills, respectively, would generate funds for school construction, repairs, technology enhancements, and other educational programs.

Town of Ball Proposition (Millage)

The Town of Ball proposes a special tax of 5 mills for 20 years, starting in 2024, to support its Fire Department. The annual revenue, estimated at $104,565, will be dedicated to fire protection services within the town.

Town of Cheneyville Proposition (Sales Tax)

Cheneyville residents will decide on a 1.25% sales and use tax for ten years, beginning July 1, 2024. The tax revenue, projected at $312,500 annually, will fund recreational park improvements, capital projects, water and sewage system upgrades, and police and fire protection services.

Fire Protection District No. 12 Proposition (In-Lieu Millage)

Fire Protection District No. 12 seeks to replace an existing ad valorem tax with a 14.96 mills tax for ten years, starting in 2024. The revenue, estimated at $348,722 annually, will be allocated to acquiring, constructing, improving, operating, and maintaining fire protection facilities and equipment.

As the election date approaches, citizens are reminded of their responsibility to participate in the democratic process. In cases where voters are assigned to inaccessible polling places, alternative voting options are available to ensure every voice is heard.
