LSP Investigates Deadly Offshore Pipeline Explosion in Plaquemines Parish

Plaquemines Parish, LA (8/18/2024) Louisiana State Police (LSP) Emergency Services Unit is investigating an offshore pipeline explosion that killed one person.

The incident occurred on Saturday, August 17, 2024, near Venice in Plaquemines Parish. The explosion resulted in the death of 40-year-old Joshua Nichols from Lake Charles.

Troopers from the LSP Emergency Services Unit responded to the scene on Sunday, August 18, 2024. The offshore pipeline explosion investigation revealed that Nichols was operating a mud boat near a natural gas pipeline. While working on the pipeline, an explosion and fire occurred, resulting in Nichols’ death. With the assistance of the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office, authorities recovered his body at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

The pipelines involved in the explosion have been blocked, but one continues to burn off the remaining natural gas. Air quality readings have been conducted, and authorities report no threat to the public. The LSP Emergency Services Unit will continue its investigation into the incident.
