Louisiana Ranked Most Stressed State in America, WalletHub Study Finds

Louisiana ranks as the most stressed state in the country, according to a new WalletHub study released in 2026.

The report places Louisiana at No. 1 overall. It highlights ongoing challenges tied to finances, health, safety, and job stability. Kentucky and New Mexico follow behind in second and third place.

WalletHub analyzed all 50 states using 40 indicators. These include work hours, income, crime rates, mental health, and access to care. The study measures how stress affects daily life across the country.

Louisiana posted a total score of 62.86, the highest in the nation. The state ranks first in work-related stress. It also ranks near the top in money-related and health concerns.

Several factors drive the ranking. Louisiana has the highest poverty rate in the country. In addition, about 16% of residents did not see a doctor due to cost.

Mental health remains a major concern. The state ranks among the worst for depression and poor mental health outcomes. At the same time, Louisiana has fewer psychologists per capita than most states.

Crime and safety concerns also add to the pressure. WalletHub includes crime rates in its health and safety category. Higher crime levels can increase anxiety and impact overall quality of life.

Work conditions continue to strain residents. Louisiana reports one of the highest unemployment rates. It also ranks lowest in job security. These conditions create long-term financial stress for many families.

At the same time, residents work longer hours but get less rest. Louisiana ranks near the top for average hours worked. However, it also ranks among the lowest for adequate sleep.

Meanwhile, stress remains a national issue. Nearly 70% of adults report needing more emotional support. Concerns about the economy, work, and the future continue to drive anxiety.

Experts say lifestyle changes can help reduce stress. However, they note that location plays a major role. States with stronger economies, lower crime, and better healthcare tend to report lower stress levels.

The findings point to ongoing challenges across Louisiana. Economic hardship, public safety, and limited healthcare access continue to impact daily life for residents.
