Baton Rouge, La. (2/24/2026) – Louisiana House Bill 100 felony speeding would make it a serious crime to drive far over the speed limit.
Representative Dixon Wallace McMakin, District 68, filed the bill for the 2026 Regular Session.

Under this proposal, a driver would commit felony speeding if they drive at least 30 miles per hour over the posted speed limit. For example, if the speed limit is 40 miles per hour and someone drives 70, they could face a felony charge.
Right now, most speeding tickets are traffic violations. However, this bill would raise the stakes for extreme speeding. Instead of just paying a ticket, a driver could face criminal penalties.
The proposed law sets strict consequences. A person convicted of felony speeding would face a fine of at least $1,000. In addition, a judge could sentence the person to at least six months in jail. The sentence could include hard labor. The judge could also impose both the fine and jail time.
If lawmakers pass House Bill 100, Louisiana would add this new crime to state law as R.S. 14:99.3. As a result, drivers who exceed the speed limit by 30 miles per hour or more could face a felony record, not just a traffic ticket.
