La’Shanda Holmes is the First Black Female Helicopter Pilot in U.S. Coast Guard History

In celebrating National Aviation History Month, The National Coast Guard Museum recognized La’Shanda Holmes as the first black female helicopter pilot in U.S. Coast Guard History.

According to the Government Printing Office, “National Aviation History Month is dedicated to exploring, recognizing, and celebrating America’s great contributions and achievements in the development of aviation.

Holmes is no stranger to prevailing against adversity. After growing up in the foster care system, she put herself through Spelman College and became the first Black female helicopter pilot in Coast Guard history!

Her numerous hours of flight time include conducting search and rescue, counter-drug, law enforcement, and Presidential intercept missions. She has continued her education at Cornell University and the Harvard Kennedy School.

Today, LCDR Holmes is Branch Chief for Enlisted Personnel Management.
