Inmate Dies at Rapides Detention Center #1

Alexandria, LA (6/30/2024) – On Saturday, June 29, 2024, a tragic suspected medical incident occurred at Rapides Detention Center #1, resulting in the death of an inmate. At approximately 3 AM, deputies responded to a medical emergency in one of the dorms where they found 52-year-old Douglas Coleman unresponsive and not breathing.

Deputies and Corrections Medical personnel immediately initiated life-saving measures, including the administration of Narcan, suspecting a possible opioid overdose. Despite their response and continuous efforts, they were unable to revive Coleman. Acadian Ambulance personnel took over the emergency care upon arrival but were also unsuccessful. Coleman was pronounced dead at approximately 3:54 AM.

The initial investigation by Corrections Security Investigators, Internal Affairs Investigators, and Crime Scene Detectives involved processing the scene, collecting evidence, and conducting interviews throughout the day. Coleman had been booked into the jail the previous night around 11:30 PM on drug and contempt of court charges. After being examined by medical personnel, he was moved into a dorm.

Preliminary findings indicate no evidence of foul play, suggesting Coleman suffered a tragic medical emergency. However, the investigation is ongoing, and autopsy and toxicology results are pending.

The Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding Coleman’s death. Further details will be released as they become available.
