Geismar: Dutchtown Middle School Student Dies During PE Class

Geismar, LA (8/14/2024) – An eighth grader at Dutchtown Middle School died after experiencing a medical emergency during PE class on Wednesday.

A spokesperson for Ascension Parish Schools confirmed that the student suffered a medical emergency while on campus. The student was taken to a hospital but, sadly, did not survive. The incident occurred during a PE class, according to multiple sources.

The name of the student is being withheld at this time out of respect for the family. Dutchtown Middle School’s principal, Douglas Walker, sent a heartfelt message home with all students, expressing the school’s profound sadness over the loss:

“It is with profound sadness that we inform you of the passing of one of our students. This loss is deeply felt across our entire school community. Our thoughts and prayers are with the student’s family during this incredibly difficult time. As we come together to support one another, our priority is to offer care and compassion to all who are affected—especially our students, teachers, and staff.”

The message also noted that grief counselors would be available on campus to assist anyone in need:

“To provide additional support, grief counselors will be on campus tomorrow. They will be available to assist anyone who may need help processing this tragic loss.”

Currently, no further information is available regarding the circumstances of the student’s death. The Dutchtown Middle School community mourns the loss and extends its support to the family during this difficult time.
