Five People Killed in Separate Single-Vehicle Crashes in the Acadiana Area

Tragedy struck the Acadiana area overnight as five people were killed in three separate single-vehicle crashes. The crashes occurred in Acadia Parish, St. Landry Parish, and Iberia Parish on August 23, 2024. Louisiana State Police Troop I are actively investigating each incident.

Acadia Parish:

Shortly after 5:00 p.m., a single-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 13 near Bluefish Road in Lyons Point claimed the lives of three Crowley residents: 27-year-old Javonta Flugence, 26-year-old Amber Davy, and 2-year-old Caroline Flugence.

The preliminary investigation revealed that their 2003 Toyota 4Runner veered off the roadway, struck a culvert, became airborne, and overturned onto its roof. None of the occupants were restrained, and they were partially ejected from the vehicle. All three sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced deceased at the scene.

St. Landry Parish

Approximately an hour later, at 6:00 p.m., another fatal crash occurred on LA Hwy 93 near Grand Lake Drive in Arnaudville.

53-year-old Kevin Meche of Arnaudville lost his life when his 2003 Chevrolet Silverado veered off the road, entered a ditch, and overturned multiple times. Meche, who was restrained, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Iberia Parish

The final crash occurred at 7:00 p.m. on LA Hwy 87 near LSU Bridge Road in Jeanerette.

45-year-old Felix Richard of New Iberia was killed when his 2011 Chevrolet Camaro left the road, struck an embankment, and collided with a tree. Richard was unrestrained and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

These five deaths in the Acadiana area underscore the devastating impact of single-vehicle crashes. Louisiana State Police collected toxicology samples as part of their ongoing investigation into these tragic incidents.

Authorities remind all drivers that while not every crash is survivable, wearing seatbelts greatly reduces the risk of injury/death. Distracted, inattentive, and reckless driving continue to be leading causes of crashes in Louisiana. Simple precautions, such as wearing seatbelts and following traffic laws, are essential for road safety.
