FDA Advises Public Not to Eat Certain Frozen Shrimp Imported from Indonesia

The FDA warns consumers not to eat, sell, or serve specific frozen shrimp imported from Indonesia.

The agency identified contamination risks in shrimp processed by PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati, also known as BMS Foods.

The affected shrimp was sold under Walmart’s Great Value brand in AL, AR, FL, GA, KY, LA, MO, MS, OH, OK, PA, TX, and WV.

FDA testing revealed cesium-137 contamination in a shipment from the Indonesian company. That shipment did not enter U.S. commerce.

FDA says shrimp from this firm appears to have been packed or held in insanitary conditions that may pose health risks.

Products Recalled

Consumers should not eat or serve these specific frozen raw shrimp products:

  • Great Value raw frozen shrimp, lot code: 8005540-1, Best by: 3/15/2027
  • Great Value raw frozen shrimp, lot code: 8005538-1, Best by: 3/15/2027
  • Great Value raw frozen shrimp, lot code: 8005539-1, Best by: 3/15/2027

These products were distributed by Walmart. Throw away any affected shrimp immediately.

Health Concerns

FDA detected cesium-137 at 68 Bq/kg in one detained sample of breaded shrimp. The level is below FDA’s 1200 Bq/kg intervention threshold.

At this level, the product would not cause acute illness. However, long-term exposure could increase cancer risk.

Cesium-137 is a radioactive isotope that can damage DNA with repeated low-level exposure.

Import Alert and Recall Action

FDA placed PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati on a new import alert for chemical contamination.

This action blocks the company’s shrimp from entering U.S. markets until conditions improve.

FDA urged Walmart and other distributors to recall affected shrimp products already shipped to U.S. stores.

Consumer Guidance

If you purchased shrimp matching these lot codes, do not eat it. Throw it away immediately.

Distributors and retailers must not sell or serve the affected shrimp.

If you suspect exposure to cesium, consult your healthcare provider.

Ongoing Investigation

The FDA investigation is ongoing. The agency continues working with CBP and Indonesian regulators to track contaminated shipments.

This advisory will be updated as more information becomes available.
