Eric Dane dies of ALS at age 53, his family confirmed Friday. The longtime television and film actor passed away on February 19, 2026, after battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
Dane revealed his ALS diagnosis in April 2025. He spoke publicly about the progressive neurological disease and continued working during his treatment. However, the condition worsened over time.
Born November 9, 1972, in San Francisco, California, Dane began acting in the early 1990s. He appeared in several television roles before gaining wider attention. He secured a recurring role as Jason Dean on Charmed, which elevated his profile.
In 2006, ABC cast him as Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy. Viewers quickly embraced the character known as “McSteamy.” Dane remained on the hit medical drama until 2012 and returned briefly in 2021.
Meanwhile, he expanded into leading roles on cable television. He starred as Captain Tom Chandler on TNT’s The Last Ship. Later, he portrayed Cal Jacobs on HBO’s Euphoria. He also played FBI Special Agent Nathan Blythe in the Amazon Prime Video series Countdown.
Dane built a steady film career alongside his television work. He appeared in X-Men: The Last Stand, Marley & Me, Valentine’s Day, and Burlesque. Most recently, he featured in Bad Boys: Ride or Die in 2024.
He married actress Rebecca Gayheart in 2004. The couple had two daughters.
