Wilson was born Grady Demond Wilson on October 13, 1946, in Valdosta, Georgia. However, he grew up in New York City and trained early in tap dance and ballet. He also made a Broadway debut as a child and later performed at Harlem’s Apollo Theater.
Before his rise to television fame, Wilson served in the United States Army from 1966 to 1968. He served with the 4th Infantry Division during the Vietnam War and suffered injuries in combat. He later received the Purple Heart for his service.
After returning home, Wilson built momentum on stage and transitioned into Hollywood roles. He appeared on major television productions, including Mission: Impossible and All in the Family. In 1971, Wilson secured the career-defining role of Lamont Sanford on Sanford and Son. He played the hardworking son of Fred Sanford, portrayed by comedy icon Redd Foxx. The show became a cultural staple, and Wilson helped drive its success throughout its run from 1972 to 1977.
The series faced turbulence when Foxx briefly left during a salary dispute in 1974. Still, Wilson remained a key figure as the show adjusted and continued. Foxx later returned, and the duo carried the sitcom until its cancellation in 1977.
Wilson later reflected on his relationship with Foxx with honesty and respect. He said he held no animosity toward Foxx, even though the departure caught him off guard. He also said the love remained visible in their work, which fans continue to watch decades later.
Following Sanford and Son, Wilson expanded his television résumé with leading roles. He starred as Raymond Ellis in the CBS comedy Baby… I’m Back! and later played Oscar Madison on ABC’s The New Odd Couple. That series offered a revamped take on the classic Odd Couple concept and paired Wilson with Ron Glass as Felix Ungar.
Wilson also appeared in films across several decades. His credits included Full Moon High, Me and the Kid, and Hammerlock. He remained active in entertainment for years and built a reputation as both a performer and a storyteller.
Wilson married Cicely Johnston in 1974, and they had six children. Although he lived a public life, he often kept his family life private. Still, his work reached millions and shaped a lasting era of American television.
