Columbia, SC: Eleven Injured in Early Morning Shooting Incident

Columbia, SC – The Richland County Sheriff’s Department reported multiple people were injured following a shooting incident early this morning.

Around 1:20 this morning, Apr. 29, deputies received a call about a large gathering of juveniles at Meadowlake Park (600 Beckman Road).

When they arrived at the scene, only a few people remained, but deputies were able to collect dozens of shell casings of multiple calibers.

At the same time, deputies attempted to make a traffic stop on a vehicle leaving the scene with no headlights. The driver didn’t stop, and a pursuit followed. Eventually, the driver stopped, and he and a passenger were arrested. The driver, 19-year-old Miquise Fulwiley, is charged with failure to stop for blue lights, simple possession of marijuana, and unlawful carry of a pistol. The passenger, 18-year-old Ty’Quan Kelly, is charged with simple possession of marijuana and unlawful carry of a pistol. A gun was recovered, and investigators are working to determine whether it was involved in the shooting incident at the park.

While all of this was happening, deputies began receiving information from dispatch that gunshot victims were arriving at area hospitals, where additional units responded.

In all, 11 people were hurt in the incident, nine with varying injuries from gunfire, one struck by a vehicle, and one with a hand injury. The victims range in age from 16 to 20 years old.

Investigators are actively working to interview victims and others involved.

The gathering at Meadowlake Park was not a park-sponsored event and involved students from various high schools.
