Colfax 2024 Juneteenth Celebration: Honoring Freedom and History

Colfax, LA (6/14/2024) — The town of Colfax is gearing up for its annual Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday, June 15, 2024, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

This year’s event, themed “Walking in Authority,” will be held at the Colfax Walking Trail. The community is invited to participate in the 10th Annual 7 x 7 Walk, a significant event to honor the ancestors who suffered the indignities of enslavement and who lived, fought, and died for freedom.

Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of enslavement in the United States, marks the day on June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce the end of the Civil War and the freedom of all enslaved people. This announcement came more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation had formally freed slaves in the Southern states. Over time, Juneteenth has evolved into a celebration of African American culture, heritage, and achievements.

The Colfax event promises a vibrant mix of activities, including music, food, fun activities, health and education resources, and fellowship opportunities. Attendees can look forward to door prizes and are encouraged to bring their tents, canopies, and chairs to enjoy the festivities.

This year’s Juneteenth celebration is a testament to the collaborative spirit and the shared commitment to remembering and honoring history.
