Alexandria, La (1/11/2025) – The Alexandria warming station schedule has been adjusted following the tragic death of Carl Blackburn, a 65-year-old homeless man.
Mr. Blackburn’s body was discovered on January 8, 2025, at 2501 3rd Street during freezing temperatures. The Rapides Parish Coroner confirmed that extreme cold contributed to his death, along with other medical issues.
In a statement to UrbanCast, the Coroner’s Office reported, “No foul play is suspected; the extreme cold weather was indeed contributory. We are currently trying to locate next of kin to arrange disposition of Mr. Blackburn’s remains.” The office asks anyone with information about his family to contact them.
City officials decided to cease warming station operations at the Bolton Avenue Community Center, effective January 11, 2025, due to improved weather forecasts. The center served over 30 individuals during recent cold conditions, providing much-needed shelter and support.
City officials expressed gratitude to partner organizations like the American Red Cross, Volunteers of America, Central Louisiana Homeless Coalition, and Manna House. However, many residents said that some agencies were unprepared for the severity of the crisis. The city’s coordination efforts ensured resources were available for vulnerable residents despite challenges.
Community members are encouraged to stay connected with local support organizations for ongoing assistance:
