Shreveport, La. (9/13/2023) – A two-year deputy with the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office (CPSO) has been arrested after an incident at Caddo Correctional Center (CCC).
Officials say D’Varciea Small arrived at CCC to prepare for his shift at around 5:45 a.m. Sept. 12. He has worked with CPSO for two years and was assigned to the Emergency Response Team. Officials say he had access to all jail cells in case of an emergency.
Investigators say Small retrieved keys and entered the cell of inmate Brandon Devon Merritt, who was charged with killing Small’s sister LaJah Small. Small then reportedly punched Merritt several times.
Merritt was transported to Ochsner’s for medical treatment.
After this incident, Small immediately resigned and was later arrested and charged with simple battery. The investigation is ongoing.
