Body of Missing Fisherman Recovered at Bayou Boeuf

Lecompte, LA (5/25/2024) — The search efforts for the young man who fell into the water while fishing and was swept away Thursday evening at the weir on Bayou Boeuf resumed early Saturday, May 25, 2024.

At approximately 9:30 AM, deputies and firefighters from the Alexandria Fire Department and District 18 Fire Department successfully recovered the body about a mile from the weir.

The deceased has been identified as Car’Tracus “Trey” Mitchell, 20, of Cheneyville, LA. Family members positively identified him. Mr. Mitchell’s body was released to the Rapides Parish Coroner’s Office, and the official cause of death will be determined after an autopsy.

The Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office (RPSO) extended their gratitude to all those involved in the recovery efforts, including the Alexandria Fire Department, District 18 Fire Department, Lecompte Police Department, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, and Acadian Ambulance. They also expressed heartfelt condolences to Mr. Mitchell’s family and friends and asked the public to keep everyone affected by this tragedy in their prayers.

Tributes from friends and family poured in on social media, highlighting Trey Mitchell’s warm and engaging personality. Karamel Kutie shared, “Man, every time I saw my lil cousin, he would hug me and say ‘wassup folk.’ He always had a smile on his face. I never saw my cousin mad or angry, not one time. He always kept me laughing.”

Joe Edward added, “Trey Mitchell was who he is! Never met a stranger. We would go to AAU tournaments, and players/coaches everywhere would walk up to him and acknowledge his presence! He was a people person! He was a leader! Our younger athletes definitely respected who he was and his game!”

The community continues to mourn the loss of Trey Mitchell, a young man remembered for his infectious smile and leadership.
