Mississippi authorities are investigating a violent weekend that left at least eight people dead and more than twenty others injured in five separate incidents tied to high school football and college events. The shootings took place between Friday night and Saturday evening, shaking communities across the state.
Leland Shooting
In Leland, officials confirmed that at least four people were killed and more than a dozen injured when gunfire erupted shortly after midnight on Main Street. The crowd had gathered following Leland High School’s homecoming gameagainst Charleston High School.
Leland Mayor John Lee said multiple victims were airlifted to regional hospitals. The conditions of several victims remain unknown. Authorities said the shooting did not occur on school grounds but near downtown, where post-game gatherings were taking place.
As of Sunday, no arrests had been announced. State and local investigators continue to work the scene and interview witnesses to determine what led to the deadly shooting.
Heidelberg Shooting
In Heidelberg, two people were killed and at least one other injured when gunfire broke out during Heidelberg High School’s homecoming celebration Friday night.
Heidelberg Police Chief Cornell White said one victim was found on the baseball field and another near the tailgating area by the bleachers. Emergency vehicles filled the school grounds as spectators ran for safety.
Law enforcement identified 18-year-old Tylar Jarod Goodloe as a person of interest. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI), Mississippi Highway Patrol, Bay Springs Police Department, and Jasper County Sheriff’s Office are assisting Heidelberg Police in the case.
Rolling Fork Shooting
A third shooting occurred at South Delta High School in Rolling Fork during a football game. The Sharkey County Sheriff’s Department confirmed shots were fired, leaving at least two people injured.
Authorities said two suspects were taken into custody for questioning. No additional details have been released, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Jackson State University Fire Incident
In Jackson, officials responded to a vehicle fire near the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday, the same day as Jackson State University’s homecoming game.
The fire occurred just before 6:15 p.m. at the old Farmers Market on Woodrow Wilson Avenue. Four vehicles were damaged, and officials said the fire appeared to have spread from one car to others nearby. The cause remains under investigation, and no injuries were reported.
Authorities have not linked this incident to any of the shootings elsewhere in the state.
Alcorn State University Shooting
At Alcorn State University in Lorman, one woman was killed and two others were injured in a shooting near the Industrial Technology Building Saturday evening.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation confirmed that the victim, 29-year-old Brekyra Fisher of Vicksburg, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two additional victims were treated for injuries. No arrests have been announced.
MBI continues to investigate and said details remain preliminary. The university issued an emergency alert urging students to shelter in place as officers responded to the scene.
Statewide Response
The string of shootings across Mississippi, many occurring around school or homecoming events has drawn concern from state officials and community leaders. Law enforcement agencies are coordinating across jurisdictions to manage investigations and prevent additional violence.
