Artemis II update: NASA continues steady progress as Orion completes a key maneuver in Earth orbit.
NASA confirmed the Artemis II crew successfully completed the proximity operations demonstration. This marked one of the mission’s early objectives.
The crew guided Orion, named Integrity, through controlled approach and retreat maneuvers. They used the interim cryogenic propulsion stage as a reference point.
During the 70-minute test, astronauts relied on onboard navigation systems and reaction control thrusters. As a result, NASA gathered valuable data on manual spacecraft handling.
After the demonstration, Orion performed an automated departure burn. This maneuver safely distanced the spacecraft from the propulsion stage.
Meanwhile, the stage will complete a disposal burn. It will re-enter Earth’s atmosphere over a remote part of the Pacific Ocean.
Four CubeSats
In addition, four CubeSats will soon deploy as secondary payloads. These small satellites aim to expand knowledge of the space environment.
Argentina’s ATENEA will study radiation shielding and communications. Saudi Arabia’s Space Weather CubeSat-1 will monitor solar activity and magnetic fields.
Germany’s TACHELES will test technologies for future lunar logistics. South Korea’s K-Rad Cube will measure radiation effects across the Van Allen belts.
However, the crew is also addressing a minor onboard issue. Astronauts reported a blinking fault light during a toilet system check.
NASA teams are reviewing the data and working with the crew. The issue remains under active troubleshooting.
Looking ahead, the next step is the perigee raise burn. This maneuver will lift the lowest point of Orion’s orbit.
Combined with the earlier apogee raise burn, these adjustments shape the spacecraft’s path. They prepare Orion for future translunar operations.
The Artemis II mission continues to build momentum. Each milestone moves NASA closer to returning astronauts beyond low Earth orbit.
