Sabine Parish, LA (1/26/2024) – Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office has reported the arrest of a 15-year-old student from Florien school for bringing a handgun onto the school campus on the evening of January 18, 2024. Shockingly, a schoolteacher, Stacey Renee Chesher (age 51) of Leesville, has also been arrested in connection with the incident. Chesher, a teacher in Sabine Parish for the past six years, now faces charges related to obstruction of justice.
The investigation was initiated by Sabine Parish Sheriff’s School Resource Officers (SROs) and Detectives following the emergence of a social media video depicting the student with the firearm in the Florien school parking lot. The video allegedly captured the student with a handgun holstered at his waistband.
Further scrutiny through school surveillance footage revealed the presence of the handgun while the student was inside the school during a basketball game that same night.
Disturbingly, the following day, teacher Chesher became aware of the video’s existence but chose not to report the incident to school officials or local law enforcement. Instead, she allegedly pressured students to delete the video, leading to her arrest on charges of obstruction of justice.
The 15-year-old student is facing charges of carrying a firearm on school property during school-sponsored functions and illegal possession of a handgun by a juvenile. Both individuals were taken into custody, with the student booked on the mentioned firearm-related charges.
Sheriff Mitchell emphasized the paramount importance of ensuring the safety of Sabine Parish students and teachers, stating that violations of state law jeopardizing school safety will result in arrests. The Sheriff’s Office collaborates closely with the Sabine Parish School Board to maintain a safe environment, with ongoing training and drills conducted for teachers, staff, and sheriff deputies throughout the school year.
The incident underscores the collective commitment to the safety of students and teachers within Sabine Parish, reinforcing the collaboration between law enforcement and educational institutions.
