Aquastar Recalls Kroger and AquaStar Shrimp Products in Louisiana and Nationwide Over Radioactive Contamination Risk

WASHINGTON, DC (9/22/2025) – Aquastar (USA) Corp., based in Seattle, Washington, has announced a recall of multiple shrimp products, including items sold in Louisiana, because of possible radioactive contamination.

Products Affected

The Aquastar shrimp recall Louisiana involves more than 85,000 packages under the KrogerKroger Mercado, and AquaStar brands:

  • Kroger Raw Colossal EZ Peel Shrimp (49,920 bags, 2 lbs)
  • Kroger Mercado Cooked Medium Peeled Tail-Off Shrimp (18,000 bags, 2 lbs)
  • AquaStar Raw Peeled Tail-On Shrimp Skewers (17,264 bags, 1.25 lbs)

Louisiana Stores Included

The recalled shrimp was distributed across more than 30 states, including Louisiana, through stores such as Kroger, Ralphs, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, Smith’s, Food 4 Less, Pick ‘n Save, and others.

Products were sold between June 12, 2025, and September 17, 2025 in AK, AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, GA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MI, MO, MS, MT, NE, NM, NV, OH, OR, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WI, WV, and WY.

Reason for Recall

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the shrimp may have been processed or stored under unsanitary conditions, raising the risk of radioactive contamination.

The FDA later clarified that the contaminant is Cesium-137 (Cs-137), a man-made radioactive isotope. While no illnesses have been reported, long-term consumption of contaminated food could increase cancer risk.
